STEP BY STEP CONSTRUCTION OF PITZER'S CABIN

Welcome to the progress page on constructing our own log cabin. This is our first log home. We are the general contractor on the job so we have managed the entire process.

We will try to educate you on log home construction while we learn in the process. We should be updating these images monthly as things move along.

If you have any questions along the way please contact us at info@ncloghomes.net.

These our house plans, the Dakota, with an addition of a loft.

It is wise to brace walls with many window openings. They tend to be weaker during construction. You can see we used some of the longer longs in the front.

This is a shot of the left side of the house. There will be a deck constructed covered with the main trusses extending out. You can see the long ramps built up on to the decking. We will need them in the next phase with very large logs.

There are two main beams that need to be constructed on the inside. They serve two purposes, first, the wall structure to separate the middle area from the bedrooms and second for the supports for the loft.

Here you can see the 18 foot loft joists connecting into the beams that stretch the length of the house.

Here we are finally completed with the loft rafters. They were very heavy. It took four men to carry and set them into place. There are 3 inch notches in each side of the beams that they sit into.

Here is a close-up of the loft rafters connecting into the beams.

After the rafters were in place we moved on to the gable ends. We needed to build a scaffold for this because we would be working at 20 feet in height. It really is taking shape.

The front went together fairly well. The middle logs between the two trapezoid windows we heavy at that height. You need to make sure you stick some 2x4s in the windows to hold them true.

We will be renting a crane to help set the ridge beam. It will span the length of the house and sit on the gable ends.

We finished both front and back gables in the same day. We have a large window in this gable so care has to be taken to support and brace it.
